Dunure Castle sits above a rock face on the Firth of Clyde. Although originally built in the 13th century, much of what remains was built in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The castle is the point of origin of the Kennedys of Carrick, who once ruled over much of south western Scotland and in August 1563, received a visit from Mary, Queen of Scots.
